Motorway toll plaza firing case, arrests

RAWALPINDI: Six suspects have been arrested in connection with a firing incident that took place at a Motorway toll plaza three days ago, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

Police also arrested a huge cache of arms from their possession. CPO Rawalpindi Syed Khalid Mehmood told the media that the accused and the staffers exchanged arguments over toll tax.

The suspects allegedly threatened the toll plaza staffers at gunpoint and later they opened fire at them, leaving three wounded including Muhammad Zeeshan, Amir Shehzad and Umar Bilal.

CPO Mehmood added that they recovered two vehicles, five rifles and bullets from the possession of the arrested men.

Moreover, police also arrested five facilitators of the suspects who helped them to avoid arrests. A case was lodged against the accused three days ago at the Naseerabad police station under terrorism, attempted murder and other sections.

The incident took place on February 26 when some armed men opened fire at the toll plaza staffers when they tried to stop their vehicle moving from Lahore to Rawalpindi.

Police said that the firing was started by an accused namely Syed Husnain Shah who wanted to use the M-Tag facility but he was asked to pay the toll tax for having zero balance and later he fled from the scene after breaking the barrier.

Earlier, police raided the residence mentioned on the car registration details but the accused managed to flee. Police arrested Husnain’s father Syed Imtiaz Shah and his brother besides recovering heavy weaponry from their house.

Moreover, police also confiscated two vehicles and shifted them to the Morgah police station. It was learnt that the suspects were owners of a poultry business.
